Is a collaboration between Sailors Grave Brewing and Nura Gunyu we feel that the natural outcome of learning and understanding between people is friendship and reconciliation.
For the last 2 years we have been working with Uncle Noel & Trish Butler of Nura Gunyu on a story telling project based around the continual conversation between first nations people and their country, the seasons and the environmental cues that frames the way they live and moved through the landscape.
This project launching in early 2021 will be a series of 6 beers, illustrated and conceptualised by Noel & Trish and will be released annually, a percentage of the proceeds of the project go directly to Nura Gunyu. Nura Gunyu are the keeper of story, we are the conduit, on each can we there is a QR code linking to Nura Gunyu where you can find out more.
The Beers so far
Honey Bush Braggot is the first beer as part of the series inspired by a traditional fermented beverage made by first nations people of fermenting nectar-heavy Banksia cones in water. Our version uses pure Banksia Serrata honey from our sweet friends at Tambo Valley Honey resulting in a toffee, caramel beer base with a deep floral character.
Signals is a delicate copper-coloured malt base brewed with native ginger, organic ginger root, cinnamon myrtle and chinook from Ryefield Hops.
RITE is a poster brewed with native cherry (Exocarpos cupressiformis) smoked malt, smoked on country by us under the guidance of Uncle Noel.
Nura gunyu is from two words "Nura" meaning Country and "Gunyu" meaning Swan.
Noel Butler, Budawang Elder from the Yuin Nation is a qualified teacher, educator, mentor, horticulturist, chef and historian; and together with his wife have been teaching, delivering programs and working with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal adults and children for over 35 years.
